Admission and requirements

What are the requirements to be accepted at The International?

Students and families must have had a showround / meeting with a member of staff. As a Danish 'efterskole' is quite different from traditional boarding schools, it is important that you know what the student is going to meet and experience.

Book your showround here!

Students must be at least 14 years old at the start of term (turning 15 during the school year).
Likewise, students must be under the age of 18 at the start of the term.

Students must have legal residence in Denmark, that means having a study visa, EU residence or permanent residence in Denmark.
We can help you with the study visa.

Students must be able to follow teaching and activities in English.

At what age do you accept students?

We accept students between the ages of 14 to 17. The students must be at least 14 at the start of the school year, (turning 15 during the school year) and have not turned 18 when school starts.

Whilst we do accept students aged 14, most of our students are aged 15-17 years old (Years 9 and 10 in the Danish school system) and therefore, we highly recommend 14 year old students to wait a year.

Is it possible to enroll this coming year if the student completes class 8 even though the student will only be 14 years old?

The International is equivalent to year 10 in the Danish School System or Year 11 in the British school system.

However, students are welcome to attend from the age of 14 years of age or year 9 in the Danish school system.

Do we need to have a showround?

Yes, it is a requirement to have had a showround of the school before you can be accepted.

We offer the possibility of both online and in-person tours as well as informal open days. This is to ensure that both students and parents fully understand the concept of the Danish 'efterskole' and what we can offer as an international school.

Cambridge and Profile electives:

What school year do I get at The International?

Year 10 i DK – year 11 i UK

For university admission, we need an A-Level or IB diploma. Does your school offer these programs?

We are a lower secondary school and as such only offer exams at IGCSE (Year 11 in the British system).

To obtain an IB diploma, we recommend one of the following schools here in Denmark http://www.ib-skoler.dk/  They offer a three or two year course at high-school level.

What Cambridge ICGSE subjects are available for students to choose from?

We offer the following five IGCSE subjects: English as First or Second Language, Maths, Combined Science, Global Perspectives and a choice of French, German or Spanish.

We also offer IGCSE Enterprise as an alternative for those students who do not need Combined Science.

How do we get approval or certification from the school for next step in our child's education?

Students will obtain international recognition in the form of an exam certificate from Cambridge International Examinations for any subject in which they receive a pass mark.

In our experience, the vast majority of IB (International Bachelor) schools in Denmark will accept students who achieve a C grade in the five subjects we offer including English, Maths and Science.

However, as every country has its own requirements, we strongly recommend speaking to your home educational institution/authority to ensure this year will be recognized prior to enrollment.

Danish 10th Grade vs. IGCSE Exams

The International offers a Cambridge IGCSE secondary education which is similar to the Danish 10th Grade. However, we do not offer the Danish State exams at The International, with the exception of Danish FP10 for those wishing to qualify their Danish.

Students will receive an internationally recognized examination certificate for those exams they take and pass from Cambridge International Examinations during the year.

Furthermore, Cambridge exams are not recognized by the Danish Ministry of Education and do not give access to upper secondary school programmes in Denmark.

Therefore, it is important that Danish students have completed their 8th and 9th Grade exams before attending The International, if they wish to directly access Danish youth study programmes.

Please note that IB schools in Denmark have their own entry requirements.

All students will have the opportunity to take the Cambridge exams with us. However, there is not formal requirement to do so.

Regardless, of exams taken, our academic programme will prepare students for the next stage of their education.

Can I attend The International in the Danish 9th Grade?

Students are welcome to attend the International as a 9th Grade student in Denmark.

However, as we do not offer the Danish State examinations, you will not achieve a 9th Grade Diploma and will be expected to complete an entrance exam (optagelsesprøve) to go to upper secondary school in Denmark.

What profile electives can I choose from?

You can see all the profile electives here.

You can choose one profile subject at the beginning of school along with your other electives.

Students are then able to change profile subjects and electives two times during the year.

However, the profile subject of Surfing requires a year-long commitment.

How many times a week do I have my profile elective?
Depending on the subject you choose, and your desired level of engagement, most profile subjects are available up to 5 times a week.
Do you offer Danish?

We offer Danish language learning at three levels:

  1. Danish for Danes - students will take the FP10 Danish exam with both a written and oral element.
  2. Intermediate Danish - for those who have a basic knowledge of the language, but require support especially in regards to writing.
  3. Danish for beginners - for those with little or no previous knowledge of the Danish language, who would like to learn Danish during the year.

It is possible to change levels during the year.
Are you a Sports Academy?

Whilst we have a strong sporting profile and are part of Campus Vedersø, we are not an elite sports college.

We offer a range of sports electives and have profile subjects in many disciplines.

The academy tag refers to our academic programme.

The payment schedule is up to you - BUT the payment ALWAYS has to be in advance!

Can we get any financial support?

You are Eligible for government subsidies as a Danish citizen - one parent being a Danish citizen is enough. Of course, the student must have Danish citizenship/passport and CPR number when they arrive at school.
You can only get a CPR number if you have permanent residence. A lot of students use the school adress as their permanent residence adress to obtain the CPR number, which we also recommend because the student then will be assigned to a doctor nearby, which can be helpful during the year.

Your financial support, depends on your income from two years prior. In that case we need to see an annual statement from two years ago.

Read more about governmental support.

When can we apply for CPR + Finansial support?

When the student have got Danish citizenship/passport and CPR number, you can apply for financial support.

You can only get a CPR number if you have permanent residence. A lot of students use the school address as their permanent residence adress to obtain the CPR number, which we also recommend because the student then will be assigned to a doctor nearby, which can be helpful during the year.

If we get the financial support, how does it work?

Before you get approved for finansial support, you pay the normal full week price. When the approval is there you will get a regulated weekly price, which means that on an annual basis you pay a reduced price.

Do you offer any scholarships?

We do not offer any scholarships.

What if the stay at T.I. is terminated before the summer holiday?

If the student stops within the first month, you will not get a refund, nor do you get the financial support regulated price.
The student has to have been here for four weeks before we do any kind of refund.

If you have paid the year in full you will be re-imbursed for the months the student will not attend. Though a termination fee of 8,000 DKK has to be paid regardless of who is terminating the stay (school or family).

If families give the school a minimum of four weeks termination notice they do not have to pay the 8,000 DKK.
