Efterskole: A perfect combination between work and pleasure

To Kim Skouborg working at an efterskole id a lifestyle which involves the whole family.

My life has been full of sport since I was a little kid waddling around with a ball. Ever since then I have been active both as a player and as a coach. Therefore, life as Principal of both The International and Vedersø Idrætsefterskole is the perfect combination of work and pleasure - which I must say was just a little more enticing than "just" working in an office.

I taught at an efterskole for five years. Loads of football and the possibility of being a part of an exciting development proces meant that I had a great start to my working life. Afterward I took a little detour teaching at Danish gymnasiums (both STX and HHX) to utilize my university degree and supplement my experience. But the efterskole life and concept soon pulled me back in.

There are few other places where one has the oppotunity to make such a big impact in the lives of young people. That is what efterskole is to me. Luckily the family was all in - and we have never regretted it.

I teach:

  • Storytelling
  • Badminton

My primary goal in working with young people

To be a part of making a positive difference in the lives of young people in a vulnerable stage in life. Furthermore, helping them get ready for life in a complex global world.

To be storytelling and our many joint challeges in our little community at the school is the perfect opportunity to talk about our values, views and how to live by them.

No work is more satisfying than helping young people get a good start to their adult lives.

My favourite quoteTo dare is to lose one's footing momentarily - not to dare is to lose oneself.

Kim's speciality; Management, Badminton and Football

- Principal with UEFA-coach license

Managing two schools with so many great and different young people is a great privilege. It has been exciting to be part of the development of The International, and I am always excited to see which nationalities will attend the school each year. To learn from them. To teach them - and to travel with them.

Combining this with my passion for sport is just an amazing perk to the job. I simply love it when I can spend time with the students in the sports halls teaching them new skills in Badminton.

Sport is for everyone - no matter their level! To be a coach is to help the individual player reach their potential - and help the team get results.

It requires effort and determination - but everything is possible for the ones who have the willpower.

Motivation needs to come from the heart but as a coach you have the responsibility to create an environment where everyone can be the best version of themselves - no matter their level.
